THE EFFECT OF RADIATION FORCE ON SATELLITES OF CONVEX SHAPE
Abstract
Studies were made for application to computations of both a satellite's attitude and trajectory, which are to take into account the effects of the radiation pressure. The radiation force acting on a body is a function of certain physical properties, of which the reflectivity of the body's surface is the most important. The force F can be expressed in the form: F equals po x A x CF. A means the projected area of the body and po is the radiation pressure in the vicinity of the earth. The function CF was introduced in analogy to the aerodynamic expression for the drag, and may be called the radiation force coefficient. The research objective was to derive accurate formulas and limits for the radiation force coefficient for certain convex bodies.
