DEVELOPMENT OF AN ION PROPELLANT SYSTEM

Abstract

A 2-wk test was made of the porous Cs vaporizer and metering pump in which the unit was operated about 30 hours. Sheathed thermocouples in contact with Cs vapor exhibited no indication of corrosion. Feasibility tests were made on the electrically operated Cs system valves for the propellant supply system. Incompatibility of precipitated carbides deposited in the region of type-316 stainless steel welds resulted in type-347 steel and welds being used exclusively where a highly corrosive Cs environment is established. Cs corrosion tests were conducted to study the effects of 1000- and 200-F Cs environments on types 316, 321, and 347 stainless steels, weldments, and dissimilar material joints.
