Abstract

CONCERNING STATIC BEND TESTS OF NOTCHED SPECIMENS: An energy analysis was made of the static bend diagram of notched specimens. The character of the terminal section of the static bend diagram (presence or absence of disruptions) is apparently determined by the ratio between the final work of rupture of the specimen (i.e., the work expended in spreading the crack) and the elastic energy accumulated in the specimenAND THE DEFORMED COMPONENTS OF THE MACHINE. An accurate determination of the final work of rupture of the specimens is thought to be obtainable by measuring the bend diagram planimetrically only in the absence of disruptions in the terminal section of the diagram. PROPAGATION OF CRACKS IN STEEL SHEETS UNDER INTERNAL STRESSES: Studies and calculations indicated that the elastic energy liberated as a crack grows, bears a definite functional relationship to both the internal stress and the size of the crack. The critical values for the length of the cracks were determined.
