GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF IBM 704 COMPUTER PROGRAMS FOR FLOW FIELD ABOUT BLUNT-NOSED BODIES OF REVOLUTION IN HYPERSONIC FLIGHT

Abstract

The scope of these programs is to generate the flow field about blunt-nosed axisymmetric bodies of revolution in hypersonic flight, including the effect of gas dissociation and vibrational excitation. The flow field about the subject category of bodies includes a subsonic and a supersonic portion. The calculations proceed by an inverse method (prescribed shock) in the subsonic region, and by characteristic procedures in the supersonic region. For a given body shape, the subsonic region is determined first by iteration; the numerical analysis is then continued in the supersonic region for the prescribed body shape. The equations which constitute the analysis which has been programmed, are included for descriptive purposes.
