EPIDEMIOLOGY AND PREVENTION OF BACILLARY DYSENTERY

Abstract

From experiments, it is evident that outbreaks of bacillary dysentery can be limited by prophylactic use of sulfonamides and antibiotics. However, it would be far preferable to control infection by some method other than essentially treating individuals at risk. At the moment it would appear that constant attention to high standards of hygiene and sanitation is the only effective method of control. However, it is to be hoped that eventual delineation of factors involved in pathogenesis will permit a satisfactory means of immunization to be developed. (Author)
