FLIGHT TEST EVALUATION OF AN IMPROVED EXTERNAL CARGO SLING SYSTEM FOR H- 34 HELICOPTERS

Abstract

A test configuration of an improved external cargo sling for a single rotor helicopter herein called cargo swing has been designed, manufactured, and flight tested on an H-34 by Vertol Division, Boeing Airplane Company. Pilot comments indicated that, when carrying various loads, the swing resulted in a substantial improvement in aircraft handling characteristicsAS COMPARED TO THE STANDARD SLING CONFIGURATION. The pilot effort required to control the helicopter when using the swing was considerably less than that required under identical conditions with the standard cargo sling.
