THERMAL STRESSES IN SPHERICAL SHELLS

Abstract

It is shown that a stationary temperature field in a thick elastic spherical shell can be represented by a Fourier Series. The individual terms of this series are associated with displacement fields and stress fields which have been explicitly determined by the method of thermoelastic potential solutions and by Boussinesq displacement potential solutions. The resulting coefficients of superposition are tabulated. With the general thick shell solution thus available, two specializations are analyzed: membrane shells, expanding radially without any stress appearing whatsoever due to heating, shells of thickness h with perceptible bending moment formation, for which the stresses have been explicitly determined.
