VULNERABILITY OF HUMAN PERFORMANCE IN COMMUNICATIONS

Abstract

Research and theoretical speculations concerning the human link as one source of vulnerability in military communication systems are highlighted. The following factors were concerned: (1) Characteristics of the message, including amount of information and readability; (2) The physical environment, with specific reference to noise, atmospheric and thermal conditions, and stress including isolation and confinement; and (3) Characteristics of the human operator including sensory, perceptual and intellectual capacities; vigilance and susceptibility to fatigue; training and memory; social, motivational and personality factors; and psychopathology.
