SMALL DEFORMATIONS SUPERPOSED ON LARGE DEFORMATIONS IN MATERIALS WITH FADING MEMORY

Abstract

THE NON-LINEAR STRESS-DEFORMATION RELATION FOR MATERIALS WITH MEMORY HAS BEEN DISCUSSED BY Green and Rivlin (Arch. Rat. Mech. Anal. 1:1, 1957) AND Green, Rivlin and Spencer (Arch. Rat. ech. Anal. 3:82, 1959). In the present analysis the restricted form applicable to small dynamic deformations superposed on large static deformations is derived. Although this can be done by making an appropriate linearization of the final result of the non-linear theory, some of the complexities of that theory are avoided b introducing the linearization at an earlier stage. The results obtained ill apply in particular to problems of wave propagation in finitely deformed viscoela tic bodies.
