HIGHER ORDER EVALUATION OF THE DIFFRACTION OF ELECTROMAGNETIC FIELDS BY CIRCULAR DISKS

Abstract

The diffracti n of an electromagnetic field by a circular perfectly conducting disk is investigated. Following a method outlined by Bouwkamp, the induced current is obtained as a power series expansion in (ka) (k = wave number, a = disk radius). General expressions for the electricAND MAGNETIC DIPOLE MOMENTS ARE OBTAINED. The scattering cross-section and higher order multipole moments are calculated for a plane wave at oblique incidence. The theory is applied to disks in the tranverse plane of a rectangular waveguide. The theory of images is employed to calculate the interaction between the disks, and the disks and the guide wall. The theoretical results are compared with experimentally obtained values. (Author)
