Research on the Production of Ultra-Pure Molybdenum

Abstract

An improved system was placed in operation for the distillation of molybdenum pentachloride, MoCl5. The sublimation system could handle up to 3 lb of MoCl5 a day; The system operates with Cl as the carrier gas, the sublimation temperature being 170 to 200 deg C, the condenser being at room temperature, and the tube connecting the sublimation chamber to the condenser being about 220 deg C. The horizontal zone-refining of MoCl5 does not appear to hold much promise; vertical zone refining appears to be the more favorable one. The production scheme for the highpurity MoCl5 includes distillation, sublimation, zone refining, and reduction.
