AN INVESTIGATION OF THE STATE OF POLARIZATION OF THE RED AND GREEN 3-LINES IN POLAR AURORAE

Abstract

The state of polarization of the lines 6300 and 5577 angstroms in polar aurorae is investigated. It is shown that during favourable conditions it is possible to decide that the difference in amount of vertical and horizontal linear polarization must be less than 1%. It is also shown that no circular polarization appears when viewed in the direction toward magnetic zenith. The conclusion is that the red and green lines emitted from polar aurora of considerable strength show no polarization. (Author)
