JET HELICOPTERS

Abstract

Research is concerned with the development of jet helicopters in the Soviet Union. The following observations were made: (1) jet engines can be used to operate mechanical rotors or jet-powered rotors on helicopters; (2) gas turbine engines for mechanical transmission of power to the rotors have serious weaknesses; (3) jet-powered rotors have much better capabilities and can be placed on the tips of the blades or in the fuselage; (4) turbojet engines are the best for tip mounting; and (5) a compressor-driven rotor with the gas turbine mounted in the fuselage is the simplest type of singlerotor helicopter and has many inherent advantages.
