NEW METALS IN MODERN ENGINEERING
Abstract
The production of metals and alloys for applications in nucleonics, electronics, telemechanics, jet engineering and rocketry are discussed. Methods cited for the purification of metals include melting in vacuum or an inert atmosphere, production of metals from gaseous compounds, and zone melting. Metals for nucleonics include U, Pu, Th, Be, Li, Zr, and the rare-earth elements Sa, Gd, Tm, La, Pm, Ce, and Pr. The special properties, principal uses, and sources and methods of refining these metals are indicated. New structural metals and alloys developed for high-speed, high-temperature and high-pressure applications utilize Ti, Ta, Nb, Zr, and In. During the 5-yr period from 1948 to 1953 the production of Ti was increased by a factor of 1000.
