Evaluation of Two Forced-Choice Formats

Abstract

The reactions of a sample of flight candidates in the U.S. Naval School, Pre-Flight were used to investigate the effect of response format on subject resistance to a forced-choice self-rating scale. The results indicated that the subjects were more favorable toward a response format allowing them to indicate the degree of applicability of each statement in pairs, even though still forced to choose one statement as relatively more applicable.
