INVESTIGATION OF ELASTIC WAVES IN THIN PLATES
Abstract
A survey of the theory of Lamb waves is given. Experiments were conducted to determine how thin a plate must be before the modes properly called Lamb waves will be excited. Measurements of group velocity of Lamb waves were made and the values agreed with calculated values. The analogy between sonic waves guided by elastic plates and electromagnetic waves is discussed. Measurements were made of the insertion loss caused (1) by artificial flaws consisted of 1/32 in.-wide sawcuts of varying depths, and (2) by eight different butt welds in 1/32 in.-steel plate. A method of locating flaws in plates by the use of Lamb waves showed promise.
