A TECHNIQUE FOR THE INVESTIGATION OF SOME EFFECTS OF PSYCHOTROPIC AND ANALGESIC DRUGS ON REFLEXIVE BEHAVIOR IN THE RAT

Abstract

A technique is presented which is capable of discriminating between analgesic and non-analgesic drugs using the rat as a subject. Variable intensities of electric shock are shown to produce two discrete reflexive responses which are differentially affected by the drugs. The results are discussed in terms of the effect of analgesics on the reduction of the emotional response to pain and in terms of the function of serotonin and norepinephrine in the production of analgesia.
