ELECTRICALLY EXPLODED WIRES. EXPERIMENTS AND THEORY
Abstract
Progress relating to the following topics is summarized: Pertinent design details of the NRL high-temperature laboratory. The design, construction, and operation of the three capacitor systems currently being employed in the program on exploding wires which will be referred to as Mylar capacitor, the Mylar-water capacitor, and the water capacitor. The theoretical program which is being carried out in conjunction with the experimental program. In particular, an elementary theory of the processes which might occur in an exploding wire is given and, where possible, numerical examples are presented which can be applied to experiments. The electronic instrumentation program which includes travelingwave scope techniques for measuring current and power in exploding wires with 10 to the minus 9th power sec resolution. The optical instrumentation problem which involves the N1C streak camera, the Model 102 ultra-high-speed streak spectrograph, and the N9GS grating streak spectrograph which has high spectral resolution. Included with the descriptions of the experimental apparatus are some preliminary experimental results. (Author)
