MEASUREMENT OF CHARGE-TRANSFER CROSS SECTIONS

Abstract

Research was conducted in the area of atomic collision phenomena. Studies were made of various aspects of atomic and molecular chargetransfer processes. Measurements of the relative efficiency of various gases in converting fast beams of N(+) and N2(+) into N and N2 neutral beams, respectively, were carried out. Measurements of the charge transfer cross sections for the reactions N(+) + Ar yields N + Ar(+), N2(+) + Ar yields N2 + Ar(+), and Ar(+) + Ar yields Ar + A(+) are being made. A preliminary study of experimental methods for detection of excited (particularly metastable) ions and atoms in beams was undertaken. (Author)
