A new method for calculating the partition function of real gases is developed and applied to the case of a plasma. The electrostatic energy is represented as a function of the Fourier coefficients of the particle density and, with the coefficients as independent variables, the configuration integral is evaluated by direct integration. A zeroth order approximation is obtained in this fashion which approaches the correct value just in the cases of low temperagy is found smaller, by 29%, than the familiar DebyeHuckel energy.
