PORTABLE PRECISION FREQUENCY METER AND PRECISE SIGNAL GENERATOR

Abstract

A laboratory model of a precise frequency meter and signal generator intended primarily for portable operation was developed, constructed, and measured. The model is 1.5 cu ft, weighs 43 lb, and uses a separate power supply. It provides frequency measurement in the 0 to 1 mc range on band 1 to an accuracy within 1 ppm when using the internal reference or to an accuracy equal to that of an external 100-kc reference. A method for extending operation to the next 3 higher decade ranges was provided for, although it is not constructed in the laboratory model. Although the model was originally intended for use only as a frequency meter, the chosen method of measurement incorporates a precise, directreading, 6-decade frequency generator which may be used as a signal generator. Care has been exercised to provide an output signal with all extraneous frequencies attenuated to a level much lower than required in the frequency meter, in order that the unit may also be used as a highly accurate, direct-reading decade signal source. The instrument may then be used as a driver for other equipment or as a laboratory instrument. (Author)
