INVESTIGATION AND SCREENING OF M17 PROPELLANT PRODUCTION FOR LOTS SUBJECT TO POOR LOW TEMPERATURE BALLISTIC PERFORMANCE

Abstract

Closed bomb tests were an effective technique for evaluating low temperature ballistic characteristics of M17 propellant. Conventional laboratory analysis failed to detect abnormalities in the propellant grains. Propellant lots tested were representative of: (1) vintage and manufacturer, (2) manufacturing technique, and (3) caliber. Lots made before the process variable studies conducted at government owned, contractoroperated plants in 1954 gave the difficulties. Lots made after 1954 generally gave satisfactory results. Disposition of the 250 propellant lots, essentially all the M17 propellant production prior to 1958, were recommended. (Author)
