A DIGITAL COMPUTER PROCEDURE FOR LEAST-SQUARES POLYNOMIAL APPROXIMATION

Abstract

Areas of application of least squares polynomial approximation (polynomial curve-fitting) are suggested and discussed. Suggestions on implementation of the technique are offered. Mathematical descriptions of the method of least squares and application of orthogonal polynomials are included. Flow-charts and a statement listing of a FORTRAN program to accomplish polynomial curvefitting are also included. (Author)
