A NOTE ON THE SECULAR EQUATION FOR RAYLEIGH WAVES

Abstract

The secular equation for Rayleigh surface waves in classical elasticity theory is examined in detail. It is shown, in particular, that when the equation has complex roots the associated displacement components are inadmissable - they do not satisfy the condition that they tend to zero at infinity. Rayleigh demonstrated this result numerically for an incompressible body. (Author)
