ELECTROPLATED CERMET COATINGS FOR OXIDATION PROTECTION OF SUBSTRATES IN EXCESS OF 2000 F

Abstract

A method was developed for electrodepositing cermet deposits of Ni, Cr, Pt, Ph, and Co-W and Al2O3, ZrO2, SiO2, and MoSi2. Deposits of these cermets were oxidation tested at 2000 and 2500 F. Those cermets showing less weight change than the pure electroplated metal were plated on Mo and tested at the test temperature. A Ni-ZrO2 cermet coating 5 mils thick protected Mo for 468 hr at 2000 F. A Cr-ZrO2 cermet protected Mo for 2 hr and 20 min at 2500 F, while a Ni-SiO2 cermet protected Mo for greater than 5 hr at 2500 F. (Author)
