ELECTRONIC COMPUTER REDUCTION OF UPPER AIR DATA
Abstract
Electronic computer reduction of upper air data is presented. The computational techniques included are: (1) Expressions which will permit the use of the ML-418/AMT-4, or the ML-476( )/AMT Humidity Element, (2) the use of the N-S and E-W components of the surface wind along with the lowest rawin data to obtain the 500-ft wind and the wind at the 1000-mb level, (3) incorporation of a correction to the elevation angles recorded by the Control Recorder to account for the curvature of the earth and the index of refraction, (4) the use of 2-min smoothing for wind computations when elevation angles of the tracking equipment are 15 degrees or higher and 4-min smoothing when elevation angles are below 15 degrees to minimize the effects of antenna hunting at the lower elevation angles, and (5) an expression used for the computation of temperature from radiosonde recorder division values to provide for better accuracy throughout all calibration and scale ranges.
