A PRELIMINARY INVESTIGATION OF A GEOSTROPHIC WIND APPROXIMATION FOR FORECASTING MAXIMUM SURFACE WIND

Abstract

The geostrophic wind is discussed as an approximation to the maximum observed wind. A semiobjective technique is presented for forecasting the maximum obtainable wind using a station gradient network and curvature considerations. The forecast method herein described had an over-all verification probability of 0.91. (Author)
