DESIGN STUDY FOR ADVANCED SOLAR THERMIONIC POWER SYSTEMS ITEM III. ELECTRICAL CHARACTERISTICS STUDY

Abstract

Results of a theoretical and experimental study of electrical characteristics of cesium-vapor and vacuum thermionic generators are presented. The results indicate that a non-optimized cesium converter can give the predicted performance. A wire spacer technique for vacuum diodes was investigated and proven entirely successful. This technique offers substantial advantages over sapphire spacers and simplifies considerably the design for the 250-watt vacuum generator. The response of both cesium and vacuum generators to sudden changes in load appears to be instantaneous for all practical purposes, thereby permitting the use of switching type voltage regulators which offer particular advantages in space applications.
