HIGH POWER CAPABILITIES OF WAVEGUIDE SYSTEMS

Abstract

Research is concerne with the various effects in waveguide systems which lead to failures at ultra-high power levels where high averages as well as high peak power become limiting factors. Ultimately a handbook will be prepared to serve as a guide for systems engineers. Subjects discussed include: (1) breakdown in non-uniform fields which result from waveguide discontinuities and the nature of the propagating modes, (2) properties of gases other than air, and (3) heating of the waveguide and resulting deleterious effects. Some preliminary experiments on breakdown and high average power effects are presented. (Author)
