TESTS OF THE GENERAL RAILWAY SIGNAL COMPANY POLYCHROME RANGE LIGHT

Abstract

Candlepower measurements of the General Railway Signal Company polychrome range light are presented for eleven low voltage lamps with wattages up to 25 watts. The effect of filament shape on beam intensity distribution is discussed in detail. It was concluded that type B polychrome assembly is superior to the type A since it provides better sector definition. Lamps with CC-6 filaments produced better results than lamps with C-2R or C-2V filaments. Candlepowers from 700 to 14,000 candles were measured for the 3.5 volt 0.3 ampere lamp and the 10 volt 25 watt lamp. (Author)AD- 260 1569N1AD-260 157LDiv. 3U (26 July 61) Coast Guard, Washington, D. Four 50,000 candlepower and one 20,000 candlepower pistol-projected parachute red flare distress signals were tested. The 50,000 candlepower flares were dated April 1960 and the 20,000 candlepower flares were dated May 1960. Candlepower, burning time, and chromaticity were determined. The candlepower of every flare was far below the nominal value. All but one flare exceeded the minimum 30-second burning time. The chromaticity of the 20,000 - canzdlepower flare deviated from prescribed limits by less than the uncertainty in measurement. The chromaticity of the nominal 50,000 - candlepower flares is far outside (toward the white) the region of the specification. (Author)
