ESTIMATE OF SHOCK STANDOFF DISTANCE AHEAD OF A GENERAL STAGNATION POINT

Abstract

The shock standoff distance ahead of a general rounded stagnation p int has been estimated under the assumption of a constant-density shock layer. It is found that, with the exception of almost-two-dimensional bodies with very strong shock waves, the present theoretical calculations and the experimental ata of Zakkav and Visic for toroids are well represented by the relation where is the shock standoff distance, Rs,x is the smaller principal shock radius, and K is the ratio of the smaller to the larger of the principal shock radii.
