A HIGH-SPEED ELECTROMECHANICAL SHUTTER

Abstract

An electromechanical shutter with submillisecond open time was designed and constr cted for accurately controlling the recording period of a Bausch and Lomb medium quartz spectrograph. By echanically harnessing the magnetic field set up by a high current surge through a small flattened wire, a slotted shutter located in front of the slit of a spectrograph is opened in about 15 microseconds after the shutter is triggered. The ope time of the present shutter can be varied from 100 to 500 microseconds and its closing time is about 5 microseconds. The shutter plate can be easily modified so that the minimum open time and cl sing time are each about 1 microsecond. (Author)
