CABLE CLIMBER

Abstract

This device was evolved from a consideration of the problems involved when it beca e necessary to ascend or descend various heights under conditions where it was impracticable to obtain a ladder, where the height involved was greater than that scalable by any normal ladder, or under emergency conditions. The Cable Climber consists of two units that are basically identical, except that the foot unit has stirrups to fit over the instep and a heel clamp, whereas the hand unit has knurled handgrips. The prototype unit can only be operated on free-swinging cables, but a unit is being developed that would enable the Cable Climber to be attached, by a quick-attach-and-relea1.60Aeronautical Instruments Lab., Naval Air Development Center, Johnsville, Pa.
