THE MECHANICS OF CONCEPT WORK: STORAGE LOAD AND SELECTION LOAD

Abstract

The results of an earlier study indicated that the ubject solving concept problems carries out two distinct functi ns--the storage of dimension values and the selection of relevant dimensions. On the basis of those results, it was argued that the information load on the stoe two functions was varied and the effect of the variations measured, F ur classes of concept problems were constructed: (1) Low storage, low selection load, (2) Low storage, high selection load, (3) High storage, low selection load, and (4) High storage, high selection load. Thirty subjects solved a series of 80 problems, 20 of each type. The results show clearage and selection functions determines the efficiency of the concept-work. I N THIS STUDY, THE LOAD ON THESE TWO FUNCTIONS WAS VARIED AND THE EFFECT OF THE VARIATIONS MEASURED, F ur classes of concept problems were constructed: (1) Low storage, low selection load, (2) Low storage, high selection load, (3) High storage, low selection load, and (4) High storage, high selection load. Thirty subjects solved a series of 80 problems, 20 of each type. The results show clear and significant effects of both storage and selection load. The nature of load and the general implications of the findings for concept-work are discussed. (Author)
