MEASUREMENT OF ELECTRICAL CONDUCTIVITY OF IONIZED AIR DURING RE-ENTRY

Abstract

THE DATA FRO THE FLIGHT OF CONDUCTIVITY METER Number 1 aboard RVX-2A Number 423 were reduced and interpreted. The meter output w s found to be correlated with vehicle dynamics during re-entry. The maximum o served value of sigma u B sub z L (where sigma = average conductivity mhos/m u = average velocity m/sec, B = magnetic flux density webers/square meter, z = component in z-direction which is normal to skin f vehicle, and L = characteristic length m) was 490 amperes/meter. Using estimate average values for u, B sub z, and L, the corresponding average c nductivity was 160 mhos/meter. (Author)
