THE MAGNETIC PROPERTIES OF THE HEUSLER ALLOYS

Abstract

A systematic survey was begun of the intrinsic magnetization of the Heusler alloys. A Sucksmith ring balance suitable for measurements of magnetizations of the order of those of the Heusler alloys was constructed. A simple method of preparation of alloys of the Heusler type was developed and the subsequent heat treatments necessary to retain the ordered Heusler phase at room temperatures investigated. X-ray powder photograph and metallographic techniques have been employed to check the constitution of the alloys at various stages of heat treatment. Samples of the following Heusler alloys are now available for detailed magnetic measurements: Cu2MnSb; Cu2MnIn; Cu2 nSn; Cu2MnAl; Cu2MnGe; Cu2MnY; and Cu2MnIn1/2Sb1/2. (Author)
