NUCLEAR STATE WAVE FUNCTIONS GENERATED BY PROJECTION OPERATORS

Abstract

The complete set of orthogonal states used in nuclear shell-model calculations is generally obtained by group-theoretical methods. It is shown how the projection operator te hnique provides an alternative method. The advantages and disadvantages of the two methods are discussed, and it is pointed out that the projection operator method combines with the antisymmetry requirement in a more natural way than the vector-coupling method. Finally, illustrative calculations are carried out for the nuclear configuration p superscript 3. (Author)
