STABLE BORON POLYMER

Abstract

The preparation and chemical properties of B monomers with the desired attributes for incorporation in high temperature polymers are discussed. The primary objective of the study was a polymer containing the B-O-B linkage and having tetravalent B atoms which would be resistant to 0 and moisture. The compound 4-dimethylaminobutyldihydroxyborane was obtained as an open chain trimer and was shown to have an inner B-N bond; difficulty of closing the ring and failure to prepare higher polymers from it appears to be due to steric effects. It was concluded that internal B-N bonds increase the kinetic stability of B compounds; the desired high molecular wt. polymers cann t be obtained; stabilities are limited by a tendency to lose amino groups by volatilization.
