SUPERSONIC FLUTTER OF AIRFRAMES WITH FLEXIBLE BODIES

Abstract

The slender body velocity potential and generalized forces are derived for circular body midwing configurations of arbitrary planform. The results are applicable to supersonic wing-body combinations undergoing both chordwise and spanwise deformation. In this work, the slender wing-body proble is re uced to a simple body problem whose solution is well known, and to a modified slender wing problem. The latter case is solved by a novel approach b sed on the circle theorem (or the method of images) and a known solution of the airfoil equation for a double interval. The generalized forces are obtained for an arbitrary number of chordwise modes and two spanwise bending modes. Quasi-slender body theory is applied to derive a higher approximation (larger reduced frequency an finene s ratio) of the velocity poten ial and generalized forces. In this work, M. T. Landahl's approach for rigid wings is extended to flexible wings. For simplicity, only one spanwise mode is tr at d, al houg t e number of chordwise mo es is arbitrary. The slender body generalized force coefficients are derived explicitly for a cone-cylinder body wi h delta wing configuration. It is found that the latter depend primarily on two geometric parameters. (Author)
