THE TUNNEL DIODE AS A NONRECIPROCAL CIRCUIT ELEMENT

Abstract

The tunnel diode frequency converter exhibits broad band nonreciprocal phase shift properties. A circuit configuration is described which achieves nonreciprocal action by means of two 3 db couplers connected by 2 transmission line sections. In one of these sections a cascaded tunnel diode up-converter-down-converter arrangement is used to provide nonreciprocal phase shift. It is shown that matching the converter arrangement to the hybrid ports precludes lossless operation. The conversion loss may be maintained low by proper selection of diode and transmission line parameters. However, such a selection of parameters results in extremely high noise figure for each converter stage. (Author)
