OPTICAL DIELECTRIC WAVEGUIDES

Abstract

A general survey is given of the properties of small glass fibers acting as dielectric waveguides in the visible region of the spectrum. In addition to single mode propagation consideration is given to the coherent excitation of 2 or more modes, mode selection, quasi-bound modes in large fibers, and cross-talk between closely spaced fibers. Finally, the modes in a FabryPerot interferometer of wide plate spacing are discussed as the limiting case of a dielectric waveguide of large cross-section and vanishingly small index difference between core and cladding.
