A STUDY OF THE ACTIVATION (LABILIZATION) OF FLUORINE ATOMS OF BENZENE BY NEIGHBORING FUNCTIONAL GROUPS

Abstract

Many aromatic fluorine compounds can now be synthesized readily by an aryl Cl-KF exchange reaction. The development of this exchange reaction involved studies on (1) the activation of halogen atoms in aromatic systems; (2) the use of organic solvents, especially dimethyl formamide and dimethyl sulfoxide, in the exchange reaction, (3) the mechanics of the reaction; and (4) factors governing the choice of metallic fluoride. Public tions and lectures summarizing the results of this program are given. (Author)
