BEAM POWER DEVELOPMENT IN A PLASMA

Abstract

The form of electric field eigenfunctions are derived which extremize the power delivered by a finite beam to the field, and these power modes are related to an instability generated by two finite beams interpenetrating a homogeneous warm plasma. Any electric field orthogonal to the (incomplete) set of these eigenfunctions produces zero power from the beam. (Author)
