LUNAR TIDAL FLUCTUATIONS IN THE IONOSPHERE

Abstract

Results are presented of a calculation of lunar tidal fluctuations according to results of observations of vertical probing of four ionosphere stations (Ashkhabad, Moscow, Tomsk, Irkutsk). The results obtained were subjected to harmonic analysis and the amplitudes and phases of the first four harmonics were found. It appeared that the second harmonic, with the greatest amplitude 0.06 mc and a constant phase equal to approximately 10 o'clock lunar time, was fundamental for delta/sub o F2. The first, third and fourth harmonics in the resulting curve are very small. However, the amplitude of the first harmonic increases to 0.04 - 0.05 mc in the curves constructed for each phase of the moon separately and the phase varies regularly by 6 hours. This indicates that the amplitude of the tidal motions depends on the time of day. (Author)
