A STUDY OF AIR CONTAMINATION AND PROTECTION FOR FOUR DOD TITANIUM SHEET ALLOYS

Abstract

The allowable times and temperatures to be used during the heating of Ti alloys for processing to sheet in order to minimize the extent of surface contamination from O and N were determined. Also determined was the media which may be substituted for air to prevent or minimize surface contamination. Results showed that with respect to relative rates of diffusion (of hardness) Ti-4Al3Mo-1V and Ti-6Al-4V were approximately the same and showed the most resistance to hardness penetration, followed in order by B-120 VCA and Ti2.5Al-16V. The same held true for metal loss except Ti-4Al-3Mo-1V had better resistance than Ti-6Al-4V. Of all the alloys, Ti-2.5Al-16V was the least resistant to air contamination. With respect to prevention of contamination, commercial or purified He and Ar were equally effective in preventing contamination. CO and mixtures of CO with He or Ar also showed promise in reducing contamination. An investigation was made of molten salts and glasses as means of protection against contamination. (Author)
