THE SUPER-FAST LONGITUDINAL PINCH

Abstract

The superfast non adiabatic pinch is a promising method of heating a plasma without violating the conditions necessary for subsequent confinement with a stabilized pinch. An experimental test of the feasibility of a superfast longitudinal pinch at high density is currently in progress. The ideas underlying this concept are reviewed and a simple theoretical model is used for calculations of the results to be expected from these experiments. (Author)
