ELASTIC AND INELASTIC THERMAL STRESSES IN AN INFINITE FLAT PLATE

Abstract

An elastic and inelas. scesa. 15 June 58, 34p. incl. illus. 11 refs. (Publication no. U-223) (Contract AF 04(647)155) Unclassified report DESCRIPTORS: (*Sheets, *Graphite, Heat trans fer,tic thermal stress analysis considering an infinite flat plate restrained in bending is investigated. Results of stress distributions and histories are presented for graphite using typical properties of this material and heat rates associated with re-entry body design. These results indicate that the elastic theory overestimates the magnitude of the maximum stresses due to the importance of stress relaxation which is considered in the inelastic stress analysis. Proper choice of graphite thickness and thermal conductivity for a given heat flux permits minimization of the maximum thermal stresses. (Author)
