ON MEASURING TRANSDUCER CHARACTERISTICS IN A WATER TANK
Abstract
The concepts and procedures of room acoustics are reviewed and adapted to underwater sound problems. These results are used in an attempt to answer engineering questions about the design of calibration tanks. Presently available procedures for predicting the far-field characteristics of a transducer from near-field measurements are described and critically reviewed. Studies are made of: (1) sound absorption by mechanically damped plates; (2) the equations for energy functions in a steady sound field; and (3) the capabilities and applications of intensity meters. An outline is given of areas requiring further study before substantial progress is possible.
