PREIMPREGNATED ROVING STUDY

Abstract

The effects of multiple pulley feed systems and mechanical brakes on the properties of preimpregnated roving during winding operations were given a preliminary evaluation. The effects of resin content, resin aging and theoretical glass content on the strand tensile strength of preimpregnated roving are being studied. Procedures are being developed for the preparation of a digital control tape for wrapping an 18-in. diameter x 24 in. long tank with preimpregnated roving by means of numerical control. Studies on various lots of preimpregnated roving stored at refrigerator and deep freeze temperatures, respectively, are being continued. A series of evaluations on the combined effects of winding tension and resin content on the hoop tensile strength of 3inch id test cylinders were made. Most of the test cylinders failed in a normal manner under hydrostatic burst testing. However, cylinders with a low resin content had a tendency to fail at an average lower stress. (Author)
