The Measurement of Vapor Pressure of Atomic Species from Spectrophotometric Measurements of the Absorption of Resonance Lines. 5. The Free Energy of Formation of TiC and ZrC

Abstract

Spectrophotometric measurements of the absorption of the Ti3371 and the Zr3601 resonance lines were made of the equilibrium vapor over the pure metals and over the corresponding carbides, utilizing a hollow cathode discharge tube source previously described to generate the thin resonance lines. From the ratio of the pressure of the metal atoms over the pure metal, and over TiC and ZrC, the standard free energy of formation of each carbide has been computed. The corresponding values of the standard heat of formation were then obtained with the aid of the known entropies and heats of warming of the various compounds.
